ingredients to make anti-inflammatory turmeric golden milk drink mix

Earthy, spicy, incredibly addictive golden milk is so delicious. Last winter, we picked up a jar of golden milk mix at one of the best blowout gourmet grocery store closing sales (50% off everything; how can you say no) and started a habit of drinking an almond milk-golden milk latte-esqe drink every evening. So luxurious. And we loved it, but when the jar ran out, I thought – I can make this! The ingredients are simple, easy to find in bulk, and the process of throwing it together is quick, so now it’s a staple in our house. Let me show you how to make it.

The magic of golden milk

There are so many health benefits of drinking golden milk. It’s loaded with antioxidants and can help with inflammation, digestion, mood, sleep, and even boost immunity. Plus, it’s just a cozy thing to have at the end of the day, or as a little pick-me-up when that late afternoon drudge hits.

Here’s how it’s done

Step 1: Prep your space

This is one of those recipes where I love to start by making a little “mise en place”. It’s just so beautiful with all the rich colors, and it’ll help to make sure everything is all nice and mixed together. First, grab a medium sized mixing bowl, a whisk, and a small pint sized jar for storage. Then, tear off a cookie-sheet sized piece of parchment paper and set it on the counter. Your canvas is prepped!

Step 2: Gather the Ingredients

Start by gathering and measuring out all of the ingredients first. Then once they are ready to go, you can just dump all of them into a bowl and give it a good mix to ensure that everything is nice and combined. Making this is so easy that mixing it up is probably the hardest thing about this.

Step 3: Mix it up

Okay so this is easy and obvious, but it’s important that you really spend a bit of time mixing the spices thoroughly. When you use this mix, you’ll only be using a few teaspoons at a time, so you want to be sure that you’re going to get a bit of every spice in there. And, that each time you dip into this magic jar of goodness, it tastes the same as the last.

Step 4: Finish and store

After it’s mixed into a deep yellow beautiful mess in your bowl, dump it into an airtight container or jar. To use, just mix a teaspoon or two into hot milk or a milk alternative. If you have one of those handheld drink mixers, use that for an extra delicious, foamy masterpiece. Otherwise, you can do it like I do and just use your teaspoon (who wants to dirty another spoon…). That’s it! Ready. But please try this with some whipped cream and extra cinnamon sprinkled on top. I mean seriously, it’s over the top good.

The recipe as shown will make about 24 servings or 1/2 cup of golden milk mix.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup turmeric powder
  • 2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp ground ginger
  • 2 Tbsp coconut, date, or brown sugar
  • 2 tsp black pepper (optional)
  • 2 tsp vanilla powder (optional)

Directions

  1. To make the golden milk mix, place turmeric powder, cinnamon, ground ginger, and sweetener into a bowl. If desired, add black pepper for extra spice or vanilla powder for a more toned down flavor. The vanilla tempers the turmeric a little, so go this route if you prefer a more muted flavor. I went spicy this time! But I like it both ways, honestly. Whisk all ingredients together thoroughly in the bowl.
  2. Once mixed, place into an airtight jar for storing. This will keep for about 3-4 months, or longer in the refrigerator.
  3. To make a hot Golden Milk, stir 2 tsp of mix into 2oz of heated milk or milk alternative. Don’t skip this step! This will help the spices blend evenly into the milk. Once mixed into a paste, add 6oz (or more depending on taste) of milk to fill the cup. Stir to fully combine.
  4. To make a cold or iced Golden Milk, stir 2 tsp of mix into a bit of water or cold milk, blending it together, before adding ice and filling with milk or milk alternative.

My motivation is to cook and bake from scratch with as many single-ingredient, minimally processed foods as possible, while still making it taste incredible for my family and sticking to our budget. Being able to do this is one of the most important things I can do for our family and is the foundation for keeping us physically and mentally healthy, and I know I am privileged to be able to do it. Over the last 15 years, I have found that there is so much out there that is so simple to make and it’s so much more rewarding and better for you to create it yourself instead of buying it. I also know that it can be intimidating and feel too time consuming to imagine making everything from scratch; so many of the recipes you’ll find here are simple, easy to make, and family-focused. Things that you can build on, stock your fridge and pantry with, or snack on. We don’t do super fancy meals – we’re just not in that season of life right now – but we do enjoy having our kitchen full of delicious food that is nourishing, budget-friendly, versatile, and fun to eat!
